Copeland and Garrett Late Spode Felspar Porcelain Plate Imari patt 3955 c 1833 b
A Copeland and Garrett Late Spode Felspar porcelain plate decorated with a richly ornate and profusely gilded Imari pattern, decorated in Spode pattern number 3955. This pattern was first introduced by Spode in 1824 and this piece dates from Copeland and Garrett period 1833 - 1847. The plate has a gilded scalloped and gadrooned rim. The pattern has a central floral spray tied with a ribbon and three gilded floral cartouches to the rim. The space between each of the cartouches is filled with iron red and blue stylised houses, similar in design to the much earlier "Doll's house" pattern. The back of the plate has an ornate pink transfer printed mark: Copeland and Garrett Late Spodes Felspar Porcelain with a printed and hand coloured and painted pattern number 3955. It also has a impressed potters mark and painted decorator's mark.
In 1821 the company run by Josiah Spode II added felspar in the body of his bone china as a purer replacement for Cornish or china stone. It helped the raw materials of the porcelain recipe fuse at a lower temperature without distorting the body. The result was a white, very glassy "china." which they called "Felspar Porcelain".
The Spode family operated from Spode Works in Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire, England from 1773 until 1829. In 1833 the works were taken over by William Taylor Copeland and Thomas Garrett the partnership ran until 1847.
This plate is approximately 10 inches (255 mm) diameter and 1 inch ( 25 mm) high. It weighs 563 grammes unpacked.
Item condition: Excellent antique condition. There is some minor wear to the gilding and a little marking from use, some fritting to the rear of the plate see image 12, no chips, cracks nor restoration. Please see the images.
This is a great item to add to any collection of Spode porcelain Copeland and Garrett plates or antique English early 19th century, late Georgian or William IV, porcelain.
