Elkington Silver Plate Six Place Cutlery Set Shield Reeded Handles Antique 1863

A superb antique six place cutlery set by the renowned maker, Elkington & Co. This is a great looking antique set of knives and forks by Elkington and with the date code for the year 1863.

The 12 knives and forks have very attractive reeded handles with vacant shields on either side. The knives are 7 3/4 inches long and the forks, 6 1/2 inches. Each item is fully marked with Elkington trade mark, the date code of Y (1863) and also bear the word Patent. They are a very tactile shape and nicely weighted so sit very nicely in the hand. Together they weigh 634g.

The company of Elkington and Co was founded in 1836 by George Richards Elkington and his brother, Henry and they were based in Newhall Street, Birmingham with showrooms at 22, Regent Street, London. They operated under the name G.R Elkington until 1842 when a third partner, Josiah Mason joined the firm. It then operated as Elkington, Mason & Co until 1861 when the partnership with Mason was terminated. The firm subsequently operated independently as Elkington & Co from 1861-1963. They were the most important silver plate maker in the U.K.

This is a great-looking set of antique silver plated cutlery, in excellent condition with just very minor scratching to the blades. Ideal for display and use.
