French antique brown salt glazed stoneware wine jug or ewer sgraffito crosshatch decoration c 1900

An antique French brown salt glazed stoneware wine jug, ewer or pitcher dating from the late 19th to early 20th century circa 1900.  It is a studio pottery artisan hand made item which decorated with a sgraffito crosshatch pattern. The loop handle has also been sgraffito decorated. It has a maximum capacity of 800 ml comfortably accommodating a bottle of wine.

The jug is made of a buff coloured stoneware with a brown dip glaze to the body. It is made in a truncated ovoid shape with a drawn rim and pinched spout and has an incised S to the base.

The jug is in very good condition and has no chips cracks nor restoration. There are some inclusions on the inside most probably from the salt being thrown into the kiln for glazing.- please see the images.  A nice item to add to any collection of antique French pottery, breweriana, brown salt glazed stoneware.
