French ornate Gothic scroll white metal mounted cut glass claret jug antique circa 1875 - shaft & globe shape decorated with thumb cuts & faceted neck

A very attractive antique French white metal mounted onion form cut glass claret jug or lidded handled decanter. This very good quality hand blown claret jug has an unusual shaft and globe glass body with a long narrow neck which is decorated with thumb cutting and faceting. The lower edge of the bowl is panel cut and has an integral glass spigot that fits into the base of the metal mount.

The ornate cast and engraved decorated white metal mount forms a spout, lid and handle for the claret jug with a strap around the lower end of the neck and a connection to the Gothic inspired base with four scroll feet. The spout has a low relief acanthus leaf decoration and sun or star form decoration. The ornate scroll handle is also decorated with acanthus leaves. The collar is engraved with three small vacant round shaped cartouches with additional floriate engraving. The low domed hinged lid has the remnants of an ornate integral scroll finial.

This claret jug was most probably made in France and dates from circa 1875. There are no maker marks. It is possible that the lid is a replacement. It is in very good, clean antique condition. The glass is slightly loose within the mounts.

The jug stands just over 13 inches (33 cm) high overall and is approximately 6 inches (15 cm) diameter. It weighs 1410 grammes unpacked. Capacity 1 1/2 pints, 30 fl oz, or 900 millilitres.

This is a lovely antique Victorian period claret jug or decanter for display and would make a very elegant addition to any dinner table or side table.
