George II Silver Cream Jug Pear Shaped HM London 1753 Louis Hamon Antique 101g
A beautiful antique Georgian Sterling silver milk jug or creamer of pear shaped form, on three ornate cast applied scroll pad feet, with a cast elaborate scroll handle that has an acanthus leaf thumb piece. The body has a scalloped rim and has been further embellished with repousse decoration with rococo scrolls, flowers, scale ground and shells. There is a vacant cartouche to the front of the jug. The terminals for the feet are adorned with relatively large leaf and shell motifs.
This beautiful example of antique silver tea-ware is fully hallmarked on the base with the Leopard's head crowned for London, the lion passant for Sterling standard silver, a lower case "s" ( it looks like an "f") for 1753-1754, makers marks an ornate scrolling gothic L H for Louis Hamon (Lewis Haman). (ref 1). Louis Hamon is recorded as working at Chandos Street in the parish of St. Paul, Covent Garden in the county of Middlesex in England. ( ref 2). The base also has the engraved initials of the original owners : T I S.
Condition: Good antique condition. Some marking and denting to the body of jug from use. Two of the feet junctions to the body have been indented from previous heavy handling, the back leg appears to have be been annealed and straightened as it is slightly brighter than the other two. There is a small nick to the front of the spout. There are traces of gilding to the interior. There is some wear to the marks. This is only to be expected on an item of this age. It is 267 years old, George II was on the throne at the time this was made in the mid 18th century.
It stands approximately 4 inches (10 cm) high and the body has a diameter of 2 1/2 inches ( 6.4 cm). It weighs 101g.
