A beautiful and usable antique Edwardian ornate lobed shaped bone china porcelain tea set with an exquisite hand painted floral pattern with burnished gilding. The pattern consists of a cobalt blue ground with a central cartouche with three pink roses surrounded by six cartouches with pink Roses and yellow and white Narcissi, surrounded with extensive burnished gilding. The cups and bowl have this design on the outside and seven cartouches painted on the inside without the cobalt blue and gilding. Every item in this set has been signed by the artist they are mostly by W. Stockley but also W. Lamonby. The manufacturer is George Jones and sons ltd of the Trent Potteries, Stoke on Trent, England using their trademark of Crescent China.Â
Each item of set has the printed Crescent China GJ makers mark and the hand painted pattern number TC 343 on the underside. The mark dates from the period 1891 until 1921. The cups and bowl are in an ornate scalloped shape with six large lobes used for the painted decoration. The foot has and ornate acanthus leaf moulded design all covered with the burnished gilding. King Edward VII was the monarch on the throne at the time this tea set was made in the early twentieth, dating from around 1905.Â
The set consists of: two large cake or bread and butter plates each with a handle, a large sugar basin, twelve tea plates, twelve saucers, and ten tea cups a total of 37 items. We are selling this as a set, other dealers may split it into trios for a higher return.
The set weighs a total 4.8 kg unpacked and is in excellent antique and very usable condition. There is some minor rubbing or marking to the gilding on some items. Two cups have filled and disguised chips to the rim, one has a crack to the rim. The foot rim on one of the large cake plates has been chipped. Â All other items have no chips, cracks nor restoration.Â
This is a beautiful, high quality, very elegant and highly decorative set in fantastic condition and over 110 years old. They make great display items and are very suitable for careful use if so desired. This set will be of interest to any collector of antique porcelain, George Jones bone china , Crescent China or highly decorative antique tea ware.
