Georgian copper & brass hot water urn antique circa 1800 - Inverted baluster shaped half caryatid S loop handles flame knop finial pedestal base 59 cm

A highly decorative and very stylish antique Georgian copper water warming urn in classical design or Adam style, dating from the Georgian period of the late eighteenth to early nineteenth century circa 1800. It is an inverted baluster shape with a tall narrow tapering neck with everted rim, flanked with half caryatid or female mask head "S" loop handles. The lid is a shaped tapering dome with a flame top finial. The curved decorative brass tap protrudes from an oval petal shaped pad at the lowest point of the urn. The tap has an ornately scrolled handle with a glass insulating knob. The urn stands on an elegant turned tapering stem decorated with a discreet band of anthemion leaves. The base of the stem is an integral part of the brass square plinth with a shaped skirt and tapering bracket feet.

The hot water urn was an essential part of the tea service by the latter half of the 18th century. It kept the water warm so that the tea pot could be refilled. The charcoal burning urn made its appearance in the 1760s and rapidly put tea and coffee kettles, which have a burner underneath, out of fashion. The discovery, patented by John Wadham in 1774, that a heated bar of cast iron, inserted in a tube around which the water flowed, acted almost as efficiently as an external charcoal burner and allowed for a more elegant design, meant that the heater could be dispensed with. (Ref 1)

The urn stands approximately 23 inches (58.5 cm) high and is  8 inches (20.3 cm) diameter approximately 11 inches (28 cm) wide overall depth 13 inches (33 cm). It weighs 5004 grammes unpacked.

It is very good antique condition with a dent to the rear of the right hand handle  and a few minor dents to the body and lid of the urn, commensurate with age and use. The cast iron warming slug is missing but a sash window weight would probably replace it. This is a great-looking item and ideal for any collector of antique copper ware, Georgian drawing room paraphernalia kitchenalia, very suitable for an interior decorator. A highly decorative and stylish object for any interior.
