Antique Georgian red floral pattern on black painted enamel decorated wrought iron hanging balance beam weighing scales - blacksmith made circa 1825
A very decorative and stylish antique Georgian period floral painted set of wrought iron hanging balance beam scales. This is a very attractive example of the blacksmith's art and great skill, it is made up of a number of pieces all fastened together with expertise and ingenuity.
The yoke shaped beam has a wrought hanging loop at each end to which pans would have hung from on chains. The pans and chains are no longer with this item. The black enamelled beam still has the original hand painted red floral enamel pattern which has now faded slightly. The beam has a "knife point" pivot edged support bar and decorative shaped pointer each expertly forged into the body. The inverted U shaped suspension frame has an integral suspension loop and hanging hook,as well as a lower suspension loop "plumb" indicator. We would date this item to the early 19th century circa 1825, George IV was on the throne at the time.
The beam is 24 1/2 inches ( 62.3 cm) long 2 5/8 inches ( 6.7 cm) wide and 15 1/2 inches (39.3 cm) high. It weighs 2.2 kg unpacked.
It is in very good antique condition with some loss to the black enamel and the faded red floral paint. It has some minor corrosion commensurate with age and use. There are no chains nor pans with this item. This is a great-looking piece and ideal for any metal ware collector. A very decorative object for any interior but particularly suitable for a period kitchen.
