Georgian Pearlware Prattware inkwell shaped as a buckle shoe - Antique circa 1800 - high temperature underglaze colours green black & red - 13.4 cm
An antique early 19th century Georgian Pratt-ware or high temperature underglaze coloured pearlware pottery inkwell made in the shape of a buckle shoe. The whole shoe is extensively decorated in Prattware underglaze colours of copper-green, iron-red and black. The shoe toe and upper (front) is painted in black with cross hatched lines, the quarters or backs are painted with a pink-red and the top with green. There are two holes outlined in black each with a separate compartment for ink.
The pot does not have a makers mark, and they are unknown but it was probably made in Staffordshire in England sometime around 1800. However, it has been suggested that it may possibly be Scottish in origin either Portobello, or Prestonpans.
The ink well is in good antique condition without chips, cracks or restoration. There is some iron staining at the right rear of the heel which we think dates from manufacture during firing. Please see the images.
The antique pearlware Prattware decorated inkwell measures about 5 1/4 inches (13.4 cm) long and about 1 3/4 inches ( 4.4 cm) wide and about 1 11/16 inches (4.2 cm) high. It weighs 125 grammes unpacked. The the rear inkwell has a maximum capacity of 25 ml.
A beautiful and rare, highly decorative item to add to any collection of antique Georgian pearlware or Pratt Ware, ink wells or hand coloured high temperature colour decorated ceramics.
