Herculaneum Pottery Greek Pattern Blue & White Pearlware Square Cusped Dessert Dish Transferware Antique circa 1810

A pearlware pottery cusped square shaped dessert dish decorated with a blue and white transfer printed design in the "Greek Pattern" with a brown enamel rim, dating from circa 1810. Unmarked but attributed to Herculaneum Pottery. This highly decorative and collectable antique blue and white transfer ware dish attributed to Messrs, Worthington, Humble and Holland of Herculaneum Pottery, of South Shore, Toxteth Park in Liverpool, Merseyside, England. (1796 - 1833)

The Herculaneum pottery underglaze blue central pattern shows a series of figures around a central round panel with a leafy vine scroll. The images of the figures were taken from “Outlines from the Figures and Compositions upon the Greek, Roman and Etruscan Vases of the late Sir William Hamilton; with engraved borders.- The Complete Collection of Antiquities from the cabinet of Sir William Hamilton by Pierre-François Hugues, Baron d'Hancarville.

There are two larger images, one with winged griffins attacking a woman in a chariot from the "Attack of the Griffin" and the other large image is of two women drawn in a chariot by four horses. To the sides are various other classical Greek figures. The neo-classical “Greek” pattern, introduced in 1806, catering to the demand for classical subjects created by the Greek Revival style. The border has a distinctive Greek key design and anthemion or palmettes.

This cusped square shaped dish which is approximately 7 3/8 inches (18.7 cm) square and stands approximately 1 3/8 inches ( 3.5 cm)  high. The dish is finely potted and weighs 315 grammes unpacked.

The dish is in very good antique condition with two tight short cracks to the rim and three frits, two to the centre panel and the other to the outside of the rim. Minor loss to the brown enamel. No chips nor restoration.
