A large Japanese Arita or Imari export porcelain baluster shaped vase - ribbed body & flared trumpet neck, Meiji period 19th century circa 1880 42.8cm

A large, extensively decorated, Japanese Arita or Imari export porcelain baluster shaped vase with a ribbed body and flared trumpet neck, dating from the Meiji period in the latter half of the 19th century. The vase has been painted in peach, iron red and manganese purple enamels over an under-glaze blue structural ground, all of which is further enhanced with copious gilding.

The main design on each side is painted with two large ornate stylised lotus petal shaped panels or cartouches. These cartouches each have a pair of cranes standing amongst flowers and grasses beneath prunus and pine trees in which sit a further pair of birds. The space between the cartouches is filled with a stylised interlocked triple lozenge floral motif or mon containing a dragon and flaming pearl. The remaining space has flowering trees, with more birds, flowers, grasses and kamons with underglaze blue diaper filled background and red chrysanthemum flowers.

The neck on the vase is decorated with a stylised brocade pattern in panels including stylised waves, flying birds and geometric patterns. The base has a deep border of stylised lotus petal panels decorated with flowers. The inside of the rim has iron red enamel floral motifs and gilding which has been rubbed.

The underside of the vase is not marked, but this vase is Imari ware or Imari yaki (伊万里焼 ) which was traditionally made around Arita in the former Hizen Province, (now the Saga prefecture) of North western Kyushu, in Japan. This beautifully decorative vase dates from the fourth quarter of the 19th century during the Meiji period (1868-1912) circa 1880.

It is in excellent antique condition. There are no chips, cracks nor restoration. Please see the images.

This is a highly collectable and very decorative item and great for display on its own as a statement piece or as part of a collection antique Japanese, oriental porcelain or Imari-yaki.
