Japanese Satsuma Pottery Vase Hand Painted Birds Butterfly Antique Meiji 1900
A Japanese Satsuma pottery ( 薩摩焼 Satsuma-yaki ) vase hand painted all round scene with a bird in flight, a bird on a blossom filled branch a butterfly and flowers. This highly collectable decorative antique Japanese pottery vase is decorated with a sky blue ground fading into white. Both the neck and foot are decorated with a gilded band, the neck having a deep gilded moriage cloud scrolls and coloured diaper cell border pattern.
The vase which is of a baluster form has a body which has been hand painted with enamels and gilding. This is Japanese Satsuma export pottery ( 京薩摩 Kyō-Satsuma ).
It is unmarked but, was probably made in the Satsuma Province ( 薩摩国 Satsuma-no Kuni ) which was an old province of Japan that is now the western half of Kagoshima Prefecture on the island of Kyūshū in Japan.
This vase dates from the late 19th to early 20th century circa 1900 and from the Meiji period (1868-1912)
The vase is approximately 8 inches ( 20.3 cm) high, 3 1/2 inches ( 9 cm) diameter at the widest. It weighs 367 grammes unpacked.
It is in good antique condition with a repair and restoration to the base, a crack to the rim, it has some minor glaze crazing and wear to the gilding and enamel Please see the images and description.
This is a highly collectable and decorative items and great for display on its own or as part of a collection antique Japanese pottery or Satsuma-yaki.
