Large Japanese Arita Porcelain Charger Painted Blue & White Bird of Paradise in Prunus Tree - antique circa 1870 19th C Meiji 41 cm diameter 2.29 kg
A large Japanese Arita porcelain charger hand painted in underglaze cobalt blue on the white porcelain body. The subject is a long tailed and crested Bird of Paradise sat on a prunus tree branch, above a hollow blue rock with Peony flowers sprouting from it. This highly decorative large plate or dish dates to the mid to late 19th century circa 1870 during the Meiji era in Japan and equating to the Victorian period in the UK.
The charger is of a round dished shape and has an underglaze blue painted kakiemon design. The back of the platter is decorated with large stylised peony flowers around the underside of the rim and blue bands around the foot rim. The base is unmarked but has six spur marks from the stilts used to support the weight of the base during the kiln firing of manufacture.Â
The charger measures 16 inches (41 cm) diameter and stands approximately 2 inches ( 5 cm) high. It weighs 2.29 kilograms unpacked.
It is in good antique condition, there is a stabilised star crack to the right of the bird. There is a chip to the back of the rim at the bottom (5 o'clock), probably caused by a plate hanger. There is kiln grit on the foot rim and minor fritting to the body. The height of the rim varies, the left side being slightly higher than the right.  Please see the images. The price takes the condition into account.
This is a beautiful, highly decorative and large example of Japanese Meiji period blue and white Arita porcelain of the mid to late 19th century. A great item for display or use.
