New Hall Porcelain Inverted Shell or Dropped Shell Dessert Service - 9 pieces - Hand Painted Imari Pattern low relief moulded - Antique ca 1820 - 4 kg

A very attractive and highly useable and collectable, nine piece, hand painted porcelain part dessert service with a low relief moulded and pierced design known as the "inverted shell" or "dropped shell" shape. A number of potteries made similar shapes to this including Samuel Alcock, Spode, Machin, Hicks and Meigh, Rathbone, Ridgway and Minton. The set is unmarked but we have attributed this service to New Hall based upon the shapes when compared to other known examples. The set dates from circa 1820, during the late Regency and George IV era in the early part of the nineteenth century.  New Hall Porcelain Company operated from The New Hall Works, Shelton, Staffordshire England, from 1781 until 1835.

The nine pieces are made of a glazed, dense, translucent, bone china body with deep cobalt blue decoration on the handles and Fleur de Lys motifs and a light blue wash on the shell shapes with additional gilded detailing. There is an orange lustre to the rims. The plates are all decorated in an iron red and peach floral design that imitates the Japanese Akae tradition often found on Imari porcelain. There are four different shaped plates, one square, two oval, two single handled serving dishes and four plates.

There is some very minor rubbing or scratching to the enamel on most items and some wear to the gilding, commensurate with age, stacking and use.

The two oval dishes are 10 3/4 inches (27.4 cm) long, and 7 7/8 inches (20 cm) wide and stand 1 7/16 inches (3.6 cm) high. One of the dishes has firing tears from manufacture to the handles as can be seen in the images.

The two single handled serving dishes are 9 1/2 inches (24 cm) long, and 8 1/2 inches (21.6 cm) wide and stand 1 7/16 inches (3.6 cm) high.

The one square plate is 8 3/4 inches (22.2 cm) long, and 8 1/4 inches (21 cm) wide and stand 1 3/16 inches (3.1 cm) high.

The four round plates are  9 1/2 inches (24 cm) long, and 9 1/8 inches (23.1 cm) wide and stand 1 3/16 inches (3.1 cm) high. One plate has a firing tear to the handle, one has a small chip to the rear of the plate, two plates have some bone china staining to the body.

Together, the set weighs 3.947 kg unpacked. A great, most attractive antique dessert set for both display and for use.
