A novelty money box or piggy bank with a relief moulded exterior design in the shape of an elephant on an irregular oval grassy base and a coin slot on its back. The money box has a Rockingham type treacle glaze giving it a great rustic look. It is an attractive, amusing and highly collectable pottery item.
There are no maker's marks as is usual with this type of ware. It may be of Yorkshire manufacture.
This money box dates from the early 19th century, circa 1830, and is a great item for any collector of treacle glazed items, novelty items or collectors of Jumbos, elephants, Pachyderms or Proboscidea.
It is in good antique condition with a chip to the bottom of the base below the right front leg. This is not visible when displayed facing to the left nor is it very obvious when viewed facing the the right. No cracks, nor restoration. Please see the images.
