Oil Painting Venice Grand Canal Signed M Aiken Re-Framed Gilt Mount early 20th C

A very attractive and decorative gilt framed oil painting of a maritime scene on the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy. It is signed in the bottom right hand corner M.Aiken. This antique painting on board dates from the early 20th century circa 1910, it has been remounted and re-framed in the recent past.

This desirable and highly decorative oil painting on board shows a gondola in the foreground with a number of sailing barges with al terzo sails (lugsails). The scene appears to have been painted from the bank of the Riva degli Schiavoni outside the Doge's Palace looking South West along the Grand Canal. The Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute at Punta della Dogana in the Dorsoduro sestiere on the right and across the Canale della Giudecca to the Chiesa del Santissimo Redentore (Church of the Most Holy Redeemer), more commonly known as Il Redentore, on the island of Giudecca to the left.

It is a well executed oil of a very popular subject matter. The painting on board with a simulated canvas front is mounted on a gilded beveled card mount in a modern gilt wooden frame with non reflective glass. The painting is in good, original condition with a couple of extremely minor marks to the oil and a small mark to the gilt mount - please see the images. It is ready to be hung.

The frame measures 23 3/8 inches ( 59.5 cm) by 17 1/4 inches ( 43.8 cm) and the visible painting is 15 9/16 inches  (39.5 cm)  by 9 3/8 inches ( 23.8 cm). The painting in its frame weighs 1.92 kg unpacked.
