Pair antique John & William Turner Ironstone China dinner plates transfer printed Turner Willow pattern - circa 1800
A pair of John & William Turner late 18th to early 19th century, ironstone china dinner plates in Turner's patent. They have both been transfer printed in blue and white with Turner's Willow pattern. (Ref 1.)
The pattern is of a chinoiserie landscape scene with temples or pagodas and islands. The decoration has been transfer printed in under glaze cobalt blue. The plates are well potted and have turned angular foot rim. The pattern is known as Turner's Willow, a design originally produced by William and John Turner. (Ref. 2)
One plate has a small hand painted workman's mark of a blue cross the other a blue line. We believe that these two plates were made by John and William Turner of Lane End (Longton) Staffordshire, England the brothers operated from 1792 until 1806.Â
The plates are 9 3/16 inches (23.3 cm) diameter, 1 inch (2.5 cm) high. They weigh 862 grammes unpacked. They are in good antique condition - one has a warped well - it has risen in the firing, the other has two chips to the rim, one of them on the underside, also a chip to the foot rim - no other chips, cracks nor restoration. There is scratching to the glaze from use. Please see the images
