Edwardian antique Ebony ribbed Doric column wooden candlesticks 6 inches high - square pedestals & tapering turned bases & capitals Gaboon Ebony 1905

A very unusual and great looking quality pair of Doric column antique Ebony wooden candlesticks with rectangular pedestals and carved, fluted or ribbed and turned ebony stems. This is an unusual shape for ebony, one which is often seen in silver and silver-plate yet seldom seen and very hard to come by in wooden form. The Doric column candlesticks have stepped near square pedestals and tapering turned bases and capitals. The underneath of the pedestals are stamped Ebony and a maker's stamp "S".

These ornate column candlesticks each comprise five quality component parts which can be disassembled for cleaning. We believe that they are made of African or Gaboon Ebony (Diospyros crassiflora) (Ref 1)

The candlesticks each have a screw in sconce or nozzle as a one piece capital. This screws into an internal thread on the top of the reeded shaft.  The bottom of the shaft has a long male threaded section which screws into a threaded hole in the bottom pedestal and holds the tapered base and top step of the pedestal in place.

These beautiful candlesticks are in very good antique condition with some minor damage to the nozzle of one where a candle has burned down and damaged the inner edge of the candle recess. Minor marks commensurate with age and use. Please see the images. 

Each candlestick measures 2 9/16 inches (6.6 cm) wide x 2 7/16 inches (6.2 cm) deep x  6 inches (15.2 cm) high. Suitable for a candle about 7/8 inches diameter. They weigh 0.325 kg unpacked.

These candlesticks made in a Georgian style would make a great addition to any dinner table, mantelpiece or side table. A beautiful pair of antique Ebony candlesticks in the neo-classical style dating from the Edwardian period circa 1905.
