A lovely pair of antique French cast brass chambersticks or bougeoir a main - hand candlesticks. These Gothic Revival - Louis XIV style candlesticks date to circa 1860. This period relates to the reign of Queen Victoria in the UK and Napoleon III in France. These cast brass chambersticks have each been cast in several sections and hard soldered together.

The base which is of a square shape is sat on four integral short bracket feet and has ornate cast handle which has been made from four small sections each hard soldered together. The centre of the base has a short tapering column which is attached to a smaller square drip tray cast in the similar design to the base. The square shaped sconce or capital is attached above the drip tray.

All elements are decorated with cast low relief design with angel heads to the corners (some collectors may refer to these as putti or cherubs). In the centre of most sections there is the head of Zephyr blowing the wind, although some collectors may refer to this as a the head of a Chinese man with a long moustache. There are floriate scrolls around all of the design and the inner border of the base on the tapering column has Fleur de Lys to the corners.

These beautiful chamberstick are in good antique condition with the usual minor marks and signs of use. One handle has a rivetted and soldered repair and is at a different angle to the other. Please see the images. Each candlestick measures 4 3/8 inches square ( 11 cm) at the base, 4 inches (10cm) high and 8 3/4 inches (22 cm) long, the nozzle is 7/8 inch (2.1 cm) square. They weigh 1.446 kg unpacked.

They would make a great addition to any dinner table, mantelpiece, side table or bedroom cabinet. A tremendous pair of antique French Gothic Revival brass chambersticks in the Louis XIV style dating from the mid-Victorian period circa 1860.
