An antique Papier Mache jewellery box that has been hand painted, in muted tones of black, brown, yellow, beige and pink, with sea weed, shells, kelp and inlaid mother of pearl. This highly decorative rectangular shaped jewellery box or casket has a hinged domed lid with a scalloped rim and base. It dates from the mid 19th century during the Victorian period circa 1850.Â
The inside is lined in purple velvet on the lid and base, there is a removable inner tray also with purple velvet lining. The front has an escutcheon with lock and hasp.Â
The jewellery box is in very good antique condition with some marking and rubbing to the top of the box, wear to the gilding on the base, Â wear on the inside of the inner top tray, an old repair to the right hand inner hinge and right hand base back corner. There is no key. All commensurate with age and use. Please see the images.
This is a beautiful item to add to any collection of Papier Mache, conchology or Victorian boxes. It is a very decorative display piece and eminently suitable for use as an antique Papier Mache jewellery box.
