Pearlware High Temperature Underglaze decorated Jug painted - Edward Croston Farm Implements Antique ca 1800 - prattware capacity 2.5 pints 17.5 cm H
Antique English pottery jug in pearlware, decorated with images of farming implements all in Pratt-ware, high temperature underglaze colours of copper-green, iron-orange and brown and antimony - yellow. There is also an inscription - Edward, Crofton. We have not identified the Edward, Crofton on this jug, there were some from Longford House, Co. Sligo in Ireland however, this jug is more likely to be Staffordshire or possibly Yorkshire in origin. There is a village named Crofton near Wakefield in West Yorkshire so may possibly from Ferry Bridge.
All the painting is very neatly and precisely done. There are four horizontal border lines in brown on the body. The top rim border with a yellow ground has alternating stars and floral or bee motifs above a swagged border of berries and long thin leaves similar to Sea Buckthorn.
The farm implements illustrated are: spade, fork, plough, axe, mallet, bill-hook, rakes, flail, sickle, mattock, pitch-forks, drag harrow, scythe, a sheaf of wheat or corn and a beer or ale barrel. This jug, some collectors may refer to it as a "Harvest Jug" has a capacity of 2.5 imperial pints or 1.45 litres. It dates to the late 18th to early 19th century circa 1790 - 1810, during the reign of George III.
Item condition: In good antique unrestored condition. Some fritting to the glaze, glaze crazing, some chipping to the foot-rim. A hairline in the glaze on the inside of the rim - it does not show on the outside. Some rubbing to the glaze on the tip of the spout. No restorations nor repairs. Please see the images.
This is a great antique item to add to any collection of antique English pottery, pearlware, Pratt-ware, harvest jugs or pitchers, Georgian or late 18th to early 19th century pottery.
