Spode

Regency Spode pearlware plate or saucer dish hand coloured transfer printed in green Chinese Bowpot design - pattern number 1867 antique circa 1815

A Spode pearlware small plate or saucer dish, transfer printed in dark green and hand coloured in a bright lime green enamel, with the Chinese Bowpot pattern. The Bowpot pattern which is based upon a Chinese original, was first introduced by Spode in around 1812 during the Regency period of the early 19th century. The plate is impressed with the makers name Spode as well as a black underglaze transfer print Spode. (Ref 1) Although not marked with the pattern number, it is pattern number 1867. This design was made in a number of colour-ways - 1869 was the same design in red, 2954 was printed in cobalt blue and enamelled in the Imari palette colours.( Ref 2)

The pattern has a central image of Chinese auspicious objects: a small table with a planter, bough-pot or bowpot with flowers in it. A square shaped vase again with flowers and a large bowl on stand filled with fruit. There are various fruits arranged around the bowl and by the table. The lip has a border pattern consisting of grapevines with bunches of grapes repeated equally four times around the plate.

The Spode family operated from Spode Works in Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire, England from 1773 until 1829. George IV was on the throne, either in his own right until 1830 or as the Prince Regent up until 1820, during the period when this plate was made.

This plate or saucer dish is approximately 1 inch ( 25 mm) high, 8 inches ( 203 mm) diameter. It weighs 321 grammes unpacked.

Item condition: good antique condition. There is a small chip to the rim at the 12 o'clock position and short crack at the 6 o'clock, probably caused by a plate hanger There is a small nick to the footrim. Please see the images.

This is a great item to add to any collection of antique Spode pearlware, small plates, saucer dishes or antique English early 19th century, Regency period or late Georgian ceramics.
