Set of Three Decanters on Stand Victorian Amber Glass and Silver Plate c 1870
A set of three amber glass spirit decanters with original silver plated mounts, sitting in a silver plated bespoke triform stand. This is a beautiful, very decorative and useful antique item dating to circa 1870, the third quarter of the 19th century.
These lovely mouth blown decanters are hand made, each with an indented base, usually termed a punt, or kick up, with a rough pontil mark. They are made from amber coloured glass, sometimes referred to as brown glass and occasionally as chestnut flasks. The decanters are a short flattened oval shape with a short centrally positioned neck. They each have a simple applied strap handle, of which the bottom terminal has been crimped differently. One with no up-stands, one with two and the other three small protrusions to help differentiate the otherwise identical bottles and ensure that the correct drink is poured!
This type of decanter was usually used for spirits such as whisky, whiskey, gin (Hollands), rum or brandy . The tops of each bottle have an integral silver plated mount with a close fitting silver plated lid or top engraved with a small floral scroll vacant cartouche.
The elegant silver plated triform stand has three scrolled cartouched feet and three bobbin turned up-stands supporting retaining bands for each decanter, These bands are soldered together and in turn joined to three small balls soldered to large central ball base for an ornate cast central carrying handle. This loop topped columnar handle is decorated with acanthus leaf scrolls and a central beaded floriate shaped disc.
The ornate gadrooned and beaded rim to the stand is also decorated with interspersed clover leaf, or more likely shamrocks, perhaps indicating an Irish origin.
It is in excellent antique condition very presentable, with some minor wear to the plate commensurate with age and use. The seams of two of the caps have very sightly opened at the bottoms. One of the decanters has a different terminal to the spout and is very slightly darker than the other two so may possibly be a replacement but, otherwise identical.
The stand is 11 inches (28 cm) high and has an approximate diameter of 11 inches (28 cm). The decanters are approximately 5 1/2 inches (14 cm) long, 3 1/2 inches ( 9cm) wide and 7 7/8 inches (20cm) high
This is a heavy, good quality item and weighs 3555 g unpacked. This is a lovely piece - highly decorative as well as extremely useful!
