Japanese Porcelain Imari Plate Imperial Chrysanthemum Meiji Antique circa 1880 - base is marked good fortune longevity 21.9 cm diameter, 3.8 cm high

A Japanese porcelain scalloped rim Imari pattern porcelain plate with hand painted and gilded intricate detail including three under-glaze blue and enamel floral and butterfly cartouches. Each of the cartouches are further decorated to the right with a scene of a room of a Japanese house viewed from outside with a large prunus tree growing above it.  Each has the same image of a seated figure leaning against a low table, with a fenced verandah to the front. The left side has stylised wave scrolls.

This is a great example of antique Japanese Imari palette porcelain from the late 19th century dating from around 1880 during the Meiji period.

The decoration features an under-glaze blue pattern outline that has been completed with iron red, peach and green enamels and gilding. The central pattern is of a stylised sixteen petal Chrysanthemum flower the usual Japanese Imperial symbol.

The rear of the plate has the hand painted pattern of three equally spaced under-glaze blue iron red enamel and gilded stylised prunus branches design and three border rings. This is a very good quality item and a very decorative example of this antique ware. The base is marked with a red and gilt mark which we believe to be a stylised version of Kotobuki 壽  for Good Fortune or Shou in Chinese for Longevity.

The plate 8 5/8 inches diameter and 1 1/2  inches high, it weighs 523g unpacked

It is in good antique condition with some rubbing and loss to the gilding and a short crack to the rim, probably from a plate hanger. Please see the images.
