Spanish antique blue & white tin glazed earthenware faience large round plate charger folk art style - Hispano Moresque Manises Valencia Spain 19th C

An interesting and very decorative example of antique Spanish tin glazed earthenware or faience marked on the back of the lip with the initials V.M.D. dating from the last half of the 19th century circa 1850 - 1900. (Ref 1).

This large round plate, dish or charger has been expertly decorated in cobalt blue against the white tin glazed eartheware body, with a freely hand painted Hispanic folk art pattern loosely based upon the earlier Moorish Hispano-Moresque designs.

This lovely large dish has the typical soft, thick and creamy white tin glaze found on maiolica, delft ware or faience.

It has a gently sloping cavetto of about one inch (2.5 cm) with a 1 1/2 inch (3.5 cm) wide lip. Some collectors may consider it to be a shallow bowl. It would display beautifully if hung on a wall or stood on a dresser or kitchen cupboard rack.

This large antique plate originates from Manises, near Valencia on the eastern Mediterranean coast of Spain. This town is renowned from it's ceramic manufacturing history dating back from the 13th century.

Condition: Very good antique condition, with typical flaking of the glaze to the rim and minor firing imperfections and stilt marks to the rear, all of which adds to it's charm. Please see the images.

The dish is 12 3/8 inches (31 cm) diameter, approximately 6 5/8 inches (17 cm) base diameter and is 1 5/8 inches (4 cm) high, it weighs 883 grammes unpacked.
