Staffordshire Flatback Figural Group Highland Couple with Grapes Antique c 1850
A very decorative and brightly coloured Staffordshire flatback figure group, possibly made by the Alpha factory and dating from around 1850s.
The figure shows a Highland couple - him with a beard and standing holding a basket of grapes and her seated and with some kind of gathered goods in a shawl on her lap. Behind them is a bullbous jar with flowers and grapes. The theme is, presumably harvesting or gleaning and there is lots of detail to this very attractive piece. The back is quite unusual as it has a textured, bark like finish.
It stands 9 1/4 inches high and is 6 3/4 inches wide. It weighs 761g and is in good order - his head has been off and re-glued but this is not too obvious or detracting. There are minor rubs and flakes to the hand applied decoration as you would expect to see with an item dating from this period.
This is a great item to add to any collection.
