A relatively rare, highly decorative and desirable item of hand blown and hand cut Cumbria Crystal in its best loved pattern, the Grasmere pattern. This large size Captain's Decanter - similar shape but larger than a ship's decanter - is a very handsome item to enhance any dinner or drinks table.
The decanter has a broad star cut base - 21 cm diameter - and stands 30cm high, including the flat topped star cut stopper. It is very heavy at 2211g and holds approximately 1500 ml. The Grasmere pattern is named after the beautiful Lake District village of the same name - home of the famous poet, William Wordsworth.
Crafted in a classic Georgian style with a broad border of fine diamond cuts, thumb cuts and long panels at the neck, the Grasmere pattern has stood the test of time and remains the most iconic and popular of all Cumbria Crystal's designs. Grasmere pattern items were used in the dinner table scenes of the hugely popular TV drama series, Downton Abbey. Daniel Craig as James Bond in the blockbuster film, Casino Royale drank from a Grasmere pattern whisky tumbler - further enhancing the kudos of the brand, which only sells in high end outlets.
This is a beautiful item to add to any collection and a rare find. It is in excellent, used condition with a few very minor marks from use- nothing significant or detracting. The stopper has a tiny nick to the base of the stem, dating from manufacture. It is a good, tight fit as you would expect with a quality decanter.
