Antique English porcelain Thomas Rose Coalport fourteen sided faceted pint sized mug or tankard painted flowers & square or French handle circa 1805
A large, pint sized, antique English porcelain mug or tankard in Royal Fluted shape with fourteen facets and a "French" square shaped handle. It has been beautifully hand painted with sprays of flowers, these eight bouquets are equally spaced around the body alternatively near the rim and the base. The inside of the base of the mug or tankard is painted with flowers and leaves. The inside and outside of the rim, base, and handle have been gilded. As it is a pint size it was probably for ale, beer, porter or cider.
The beautifully depicted floral bouquets feature roses, violets, forget me nots, daisies and foliage in pastel shades. There are no maker's marks as is often the case with porcelain dating from this period but has been attributed to Thomas Rose of Coalport, Shropshire England circa 1805, the younger brother of John Rose also of Coalport but, on the other side of the canal! Thomas was in a partnership often known as Anstice, Horton and Rose.
It is in good antique condition without chips nor restoration, there is a feint star crack to the base and some wear to the gilding. It is a great item to add to any collection of antique early 19th century English Georgian period porcelain or Regency era ceramics.
