Victorian Blue & White Dinner Plate Romantic Pattern No 15 circa 1850 - Transfer printed Italianate design inspired garden landscape pattern 26.7 cm
An antique Staffordshire blue and white transfer printed twelve sided earthenware plate showing a romantic large estate garden landscape. It dates to the mid 19th century circa 1850, when Queen Victoria was on the throne.
This Italianate design inspired pattern has a main focal point in the foreground of two elegantly dressed ladies, one with a parasol standing by the bank of a lake or river whilst watching a pair of swans on the water. Immediately above them on the opposite bank is a classical Italianate stone columned folly amongst trees. In the distance is a long bridge spanning the river.
The wide decorative border has a geometric concentric form of lines and circles and swagged "curtains" border and floriate border.
The base has a printed mark with "No. 15" in a geometric bordered cartouche. A number of potters made patterns that include "No." numbers in their repertoire including Enoch Wood, Charles Meigh, John and Robert Godwin, Minton, John Ridgway and Bovey Tracy as well as other makers who may have used this form of pattern identification, though no reference to this particular No. 15 has been located and is unattributed other than to an unknown Staffordshire potter.
The plate has a foot rim and stands 1 1/4 inches high and is 10 1/2 inches in diameter. It weighs a total of 553 grammes unpacked.
The plate is in good antique condition, it has small chip to the back of one of the corner on the rim and some minor staining or discolouration to the edges of the rim. Please see the images.
This is a very attractive plate for display and will be of particular interest to collectors of Romantic pattern and English blue and white transferware.
