Exquisitely modelled antique Victorian European Continental bisque porcelain swan cachepot jardinière or planter circa 1900 - 15.8 cm H 21 cm Long
A beautifully modelled antique European continental bisque porcelain swan shaped cachepot, small jardiniere or planter. It is made of hard paste bisque or biscuit porcelain and was possibly made in Dresden in Germany. It dates to the late Victorian period of the late 19th century to early 20th century circa 1900.
The swan has been naturalistically modelled with a great amount of detail including the feathers, webbed feet, claws, head, eyes and open beak with tongue. The bird has been modelled in the swimming position with wings raised like sails, feet to the rear, an arched neck and also appears to be hissing!
The base is marked with a hand incised model number 1283 and the capital letter A. We have so far been unable to attribute a manufacturer to this item, but is certainly Continental European in origin.
The swan is 6 1/4 inches ( 15.8 cm) high and 8 1/4 inches (21 cm) long, 5 3/4 inches (14.6 cm) wide. It weighs 692 grammes unpacked. It is in very good antique condition, no chips nor restoration, there are two tight cracks to the left wing, possibly firing tears. Some minor fritting from manufacture. Please see the images.
