Mappin & Webb silver plated melon shaped tea pot with floral repousse acanthus scroll spout & handle cast melon knob - antique early Victorian c 1865

A fantastic quality and elegant, antique, early Victorian melon shaped silver plated tea pot by the renowned makers Mappin and Webb circa 1865. This is a very decorative looking and useful tea pot from the mid 19th century. It is of a low round footed melon shape with repousse work, embossing and engraving. The knob on the lid is naturalistically cast in the shape of a melon or pumpkin.

The body has two large vacant cartouches either side, bordered with rococo scrolls. On each side of these cartouches are large repousse sprays of flowers on a matte background. The long S shaped spout is cast in the form of an acanthus leaf and the scroll handle is similarly decorated and has bovine bone insulators. This large teapot has a maximum capacity of about 2 1/2 pints.

The base is stamped with the maker's mark Mappin & Webb London & Sheffield the capital letter L and the number 212. The company of Mappin and Webb operated from The Royal Cutlery Works on Pond Hill, Sheffield, South Yorkshire.

The teapot is in very good antique condition with a little very minor marking to the plate. The bovine bone insulators have shrunk slightly so there is a little wobble to the handle, although all four locating pins are in place. It is difficult to take images of silver plate without getting some reflection of the camera in the body, please note the black marks in the photos are the camera reflection and not marking. 

This is a very attractive antique high quality silver plated tea pot, highly decorative for either display or use.
