Victorian Gilt Framed Oil Painting European Lake Mountain Landscape Monogram GKM 1873
A very attractive and collectable gilt framed Victorian oil painting on canvas of a European lake and mountain sunset landscape scene marked with a painted monogram GKM in the lower right hand corner. It is also inscribed on the stretcher on the back GKM 1873.
This very desirable and highly decorative oil painting on canvas shows a mountainous and lake scene, most probably European Alpine due to the size and scale of the mountains and the lake and the types of tree. We are currently uncertain of the exact scene location, it may possibly be Walensee, also known as Lake Walen, near Walenstadt in the St Gallen canton of Switzerland.
It is a well executed oil of a long and large lake with a number of sailing boats on it that help to give the scale of the width of the lake and the great height of the mountains. In the right foreground there is a woman in a long red dress with her head covered with a large green shawl carrying a basket as she walks along a track above the edge of the lake towards the red sunset.
The painting has a wooden stretcher which is mounted in a gilt plaster moulded wooden frame. The frame is possibly a replacement, although looks to be contemporary to the painting. The painting is in good, original condition with a couple of extremely minor marks to the oil - see images.
The frame measures 34 3/4 inches ( 88 cm) by 24 1/2 inches (62 cm) and the visible painting is 29 3/4 inches (76 cm) by 19 1/2 inches (49.5cm). The painting in its frame weighs 3.3 kg unpacked.
